OCSG news

Hello All,

I have been quiet since the end of February 2009 as I changed job, from JBA to self-employment status. So I am currently working for ST Water Solutions until mid-May 2009. Why? Because I have been offered a permanent position in Paris, France, working for the equivalent of the Environment Agency. This means that my involvement with OCSG will be greatly diminished.
Still, before I leave I will deliver the OCSG Action Plan, document that should help keeping our group together, I will keep an eye on the situation and will be back in Newcastle to check the progress on some actions.
I will soon let you know about a new OCSG meeting and will also circulate the OCAP to all our members for comments and correction.
See you all very soon.
Sebastien

Leaving JBA, being self-employed

Dear All,

A slight change on my status for the next couple of month at least, I will leave JBA at the end of February BUT will carry on working with the OCSG through my own consultancy. My main task will be to write up the OCSG Action Plan, which I want a draft copy to be ready for the end of March 2009!
Anyway, I am going on holiday at the end of the week but will be back from the 10 March for more posts and more activities for 2009!

Tuesday 20th January: OCSG meeting

Dear all,

Just a reminder about the lecture on Tuesday evening, this will take place in Room 2.32 in the Cassie Building, it should be very interesting as University staff will attend as well as staff from NCC, EA and NWL.
If we have some time left, we will update everybody on the current issues in the Ouseburn.
I have also started to work on the OCSG Action Plan, this should be ready for consultation at the end of February at the latest!
Looking forward to see you all next week and in the meantime, have a look to the following work of "water art".

Happy New Year 2009

Our group should have its busier year ever and we are kickstarting it with an evening meeting, on Tuesday 20th January, with a presentation on the elusive Water Framework Directive application in UK by Malcolm Newson, Tyne Rivers Trust Director.
Paul and I will also attend a Newcastle Great Park Advisory Committee meeting on the 19th, where we will have a chance to present our ideas to this group.
Finally, we will write in the next 7 weeks the OCSG action plan for the Ouseburn. We will send our first draft to all our members for comments and suggestions. I will give more details during our next meeting.

Sebastien

PS: I attended the public meeting on the September 2008 flooding in the Ouseburn in Brunton Park before Christmas. St Aidan's church was packed and Newcastle City Council, Environment Agency and Northumbrian Water presented their views on the flood events and their response to it. Some members of the audience were irate as they thought they were hearing the same thing again and again. Nonetheless, John Shipley reiterated that these three agencies will carry on working together to solve the current flooding issues in the upper Ouseburn for the years to come.

Update week starting on 24th November

Paul and I had a good meeting with all the different parties (EA, NCC, NWL, NGP)in Newcastle Great Park offices. The main output of the meeting is to create a post-flood statement for the Ouseburn residents and to convene more meetings to keep all the different parties aware of everybody's moves.
We received the confirmation from Newcastle City Council that we can attend the 20 January 2009 NGP advisory committee and present our view on the issues in the Ouseburn.
We are also attending CPRE meeting tonight to present our group objectives.
I also need to start writing the Action Delivery Plan, this should hopefully start next week.
In the meantime, have all a good week.

Site visit in the Ouseburn

Morning,

My second post of the day is about the site visit we undertook with Steve Barrrett, Bob Wilkin, Derek Hilton-Brown, Paul Quinn and I. We started in Callerton, looking at the source of the Ouseburn and we agreed that the pond is currently silting up and need some management. It might be the only wetland in Newcastle and it would be a shame if the City loses it.

We then went to look at a pond stuck between the A696 and the Metro line, the Ouseburn discharges into the pond via a small pipe and there seems to be no outlet pipe, hence the small inlet pipe. North of the pond, there is a hollow where water stands.
We also went to Gosforth Golf Course where we had a meeting with the Club Committee and we found that the the Golf Course has been shut 50 days this year due to floodwater still present on the course.
We finished our site visit with Jesmond Dene, looking at a weir near Pet's Corner, that Sarah from Jesmond Dene Ranger services would like to remove.
Anyway, I have uploaded some photographs of the site visit, have a look here:
